Our Mission
The La Center Lions Club is a volunteer service organization and 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving La Center, Washington and the surrounding communities of north Clark County. Our mission is to improve the lives of our neighbors through hands-on community service and charitable giving: feeding seniors and families in need, supporting local youth through scholarships and health screenings, comforting babies and toddlers with cancer, protecting sight and hearing, and bringing people together through events that make La Center a better place to live.
Chartered in 1984, we are a member club of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organization, with 1.4 million members in 49,000 clubs across more than 200 countries. Lions have served under the motto “We Serve” since 1917. Every dollar we raise goes back into our community; our members are all unpaid volunteers.
What We Do
Feeding our neighbors
- La Center Lions Senior Lunch: a free hot lunch for local seniors every Thursday at the La Center Community Center.
- Holiday food baskets for local families each November and December.
- Participation in the annual Walk & Knock food drive.
Helping families in need
- The Giving Tree: each Christmas, gift tags for local families in need go up at businesses around town. Community members buy the gifts and the Lions deliver them, along with food, cleaning supplies, and toiletries, to an average of 25 La Center families.
- Community funding requests: quarterly grants to La Center organizations doing good work in our community. Learn how to apply.
Supporting youth and education
- Two $1,500 scholarships awarded each year to La Center High School graduates.
- Free sight and hearing screenings for students in the La Center School District.
- Volunteer support for La Center High School athletics, including the chain gang at home football games.
Comforting babies and toddlers with cancer
- Wonderful Onesies: onesies we modify and sew so babies and toddlers in chemotherapy can stay fully dressed while medical staff reach their chemo port, sent free to any family who asks. Winner of a Lions International Kindness Matters Service Award. Learn more at wonderfulonesies.org.
Protecting sight and hearing
- Free vision and hearing screenings for La Center students.
- Used eyeglass collection for recycling.
- Support for Leader Dogs for the Blind.
Bringing the community together
- Annual Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt
- Our Days Festival root beer float booth and parade float
- National Night Out
- Hot cocoa and cider booth at the La Center Christmas Festival
- Community 5K run/walk
How we pay for it
- Our annual fireworks stand (June 28 to July 4) is our biggest fundraiser.
- The pancake breakfast and Our Days root beer float sales.
- Donations from the community, which are tax-deductible to the La Center Lions Club.
Our Global Causes
Alongside our local work, we support the eight global causes of Lions Clubs International: Childhood Cancer, Diabetes, Disaster Relief, Environment, Humanitarian Aid, Hunger, Vision, and Youth.
